Las Madres de Berks: Documentary film & Panel on the Incarceration & Deportation of Immigrant Families

What:

Please join us for this very special event, which will feature a short documentary and a panel discussion about the incarceration of immigrants in Pennsylvania, and activist efforts (including those of Penn undergrads) to defend immigrants. Dinner will be served!

Visual artist Michelle Angela Ortiz.(link is external) will be screening her short documentary, "Las Madres de Berks,” as part of her "Familias Separadas” public art project which amplifies the stories of families affected by detention and deportation in Pennsylvania. "Las Madres de Berks," which has Spanish and English subtitles, shares testimonials of four mothers who were detained for two years with their children at The Berks County Residential Center, a prison outside of Philadelphia where immigrant families, including children as young as two-weeks-old, have been incarcerated. The screening will be followed by a talkback to learn ways to take action to defend immigrants. It will include Ale Cabrales and Erik Vargas of Penn for Immigrant Rights, moderated by Paul Farber of Monument Lab/Penn Center for Public Art and Space.

This screening is presented in partnership with the Shut Down Berks Coalition. This event is presented in collaboration with the Greenfield Intercultural Center (GIC), The Center for Public Art and Space at the Weitzman School of Design, La Casa Latina, Latin American and Latino Studies, PAACH, PAAGSA, and Penn for Immigrant Rights, and is supported by a Campaign for Community grant.

This event is open to the Penn and greater Philadelphia community. As dinner will be served, an RSVP is encouraged: bit.ly/2Nkzz6Q
