Benjamin Franklin 300th Anniversary Celebration

You are cordially invited to join Penn in celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of our founder Benjamin Franklin to Philadelphia, this October 6th at Perry World House.

This special program will include a lunch reception and brief remarks by experts, exploring the life, legacy, and lasting contributions of one of history's most accomplished figures. Please find event details and a link to register included below.

On October 6, 1723, Penn’s founder, Benjamin Franklin, arrived in Philadelphia after a long journey from Boston. He was a lanky 17-year-old seeking new opportunities, with nothing but a few coins in his pocket and some bread in his arms. His arrival marked the beginning of a remarkable journey, one that would see him become a printer, author, inventor, scientist, diplomat, and statesman, establishing an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations today.

This October 6th marks 300 years to-date since Benjamin Franklin arrived in his beloved city of Philadelphia. Penn will celebrate this milestone year with a reception at Perry World House on October 6, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., with remarks from Provost John L. Jackson Jr.; Dr. Emma Hart, Penn Professor of History; Dr. Michael Barsanti, Director of the Library Company of Philadelphia; and Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Vice Provost for Global Initiatives.

Today’s Penn student owes a debt to Franklin for founding the university in 1749. They also can find inspiration for their own studies and lives as they think about how to take risks and make a difference. All Penn students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the local community are invited to attend this celebration, where a free and healthy lunch will be available starting at noon.

Penn students attending the event are also invited to enter a raffle to win a private dinner for you and four friends with Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, who himself was inspired by Franklin’s life and career to create a course on “Ben Franklin and his World,” at the historic Valley Green Inn; one of the oldest restaurants in the area and an example of the style taverns Franklin would frequent. Students can enter the raffle onsite at Perry World House during the October 6th event.
